For several days in a row, he faithfully perched just outside our kitchen window...amusing us.
What we didn't know was that he was protecting his territory which just happened to include our hummingbird feeder...
|please, oh please, ignore my messy windowsill...|
So the kids and I were sitting in the family room listening to a history lecture one afternoon about a week ago when all the sudden we heard a pretty hard "thump!" on one of the windows right behind where Daniel was sitting. Curiosity required that we take a look and there, laying on the patio just below the window was our friend the hummingbird...flat on his back. Out cold.
Of course the kids immediately ran outside to check it out; AnnaLynn cautiously picked him up, and we weren't sure if he was dead or alive. Should we put him up someplace high? In a planter so that when he comes to he could fly away? AnnaLynn did carefully set him into a planter filled with yellow pansies just outside the kitchen window, but the cats started circling, so Daniel picked him up. Within just a minute or so, our little friend began coming out of it's stupor...
The cats, still circling, thought they had a tasty meal coming, but before we knew it...he flew off!
Perching on a branch at the edge of our lawn, he puffed himself up as if to say, "I'm back, and this is still my territory."
Almost immediately, it seemed that every hummingbird living on our 2.5 acres swarmed our feeder--it was crazy, almost scary--I really wish I'd been able to capture video of it to share with you! And although our friend the hummingbird survived his collision with our family room window, he wound up losing the territorial battle over our feeder.
So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. ~Genesis 1:21
